Birkent was first author of a 2009 Journal of Laryngology & Otology study relating nasal-cavity measurements to nasalance, a measure of the nasal component of speech. The study used a decongestant in 21 adult volunteers. It was not a cosmetic-rhinoplasty trial and cannot predict how surgery would affect an individual voice.
