Independent doctor profile

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Öğretmenoğlu

Oğuz Öğretmenoğlu’s current Ankara practice identifies him as an ENT and head-and-neck surgeon and lists rhinoplasty, septal perforation, sinus surgery, snoring and sleep-apnoea care. His biography records a Hacettepe academic career and invited academic work at several US centres. This independent profile uses his official material and PubMed records to prepare consultation questions; it does not represent or book him.

Education and professional background

  1. Academic training

    Hacettepe medicine, ENT and professorship

The official biography records Hacettepe medical graduation in 1988, ENT specialist training from 1988 to 1992, later faculty appointments and professorship in 2004. It also says he established sleep-apnoea/snoring and allergic-rhinitis units at Hacettepe. The page supports this chronology but not a current university appointment; the present identity is his Ankara practice.

  2. International exposure

Invited academic work at US centres

His biography records invited work in 2000 and 2003 at Mayo Clinic, Stanford Sleep Center, Settlif Sinus Center, Loyola and Illinois universities. These named visits and English-language indexed publications are verifiable research signals for UK-facing review, not proof of US certification, overseas practice or comparative popularity.

What does the practice focus on?

01

Ask whether the case is aesthetic, septal, sinus or sleep-related

The current practice spans rhinoplasty, septal perforation, sinus procedures and sleep-disordered breathing. Similar symptoms can lead to different work-ups. Ask which diagnosis is supported by examination or testing, whether one operation is expected to address more than one problem and which symptoms may need medical or sleep treatment instead.

02

Turn nasal-packing research into a recovery question

A 2002 study led by Öğretmenoğlu measured blood gases and heart rate after bilateral nasal packing in people who had septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. It is an older small study, not a rule that every patient needs packing. Ask whether packing or splints are planned, why, for how long and what breathing or bleeding signs require urgent review.

Clinical interests & published evidence

Evidence reviewed:

A broad nasal and sleep-airway practice needs diagnostic separation

The official practice lists rhinoplasty, septal perforation, sinus surgery, snoring and sleep-apnoea topics. His 2024 co-authored publication also examines nasopharyngeal airway volume in an orthodontic context. These signals support a broad airway discussion, but they do not mean one nasal operation treats every obstruction, sleep symptom or facial concern.

Older packing physiology research supports a modern protocol question

The 2002 study measured oxygen-related blood gases and heart rate after bilateral packing in 21 people after septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. It found physiological changes but explicitly called for further research. It should prompt a current, patient-specific discussion of whether packing is used and how breathing is monitored—not an assumption that an older technique remains routine.

Understanding nasal surgery

Different goals. One carefully considered plan.

A useful consultation separates what you would like to change from what an examination can establish. The guide below explains the vocabulary used in nasal surgery. It is general education, not a description of this doctor’s personal technique or a recommendation for your case.

Three questions for an individual assessment
01

Form

What would you like to change about your nose within the proportions of your face?

02

Breathing

Which symptoms need an internal examination and discussion of possible causes?

03

History

How do previous treatment, health and expectations inform the discussion?

Conceptual planning diagram, not a diagnostic image or a prediction of surgical results.

01

Rhinoplasty: the external shape

Rhinoplasty changes the shape or size of the nose. Open and closed describe access through different incision patterns; these words alone do not tell you what structural work is planned. Ask your surgeon to explain the proposed changes, their limitations and why that access suits your anatomy.

NHS · Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)

02

Septoplasty: the internal partition

The septum divides the two nasal passages. A deviation can contribute to obstruction, but an off-centre septum does not always cause symptoms. Assessment considers other contributors, including the turbinates and nasal valves. Septoplasty addresses the septum; a combined septorhinoplasty also addresses the external nose.

03

Revision: understand the earlier operation

If you have already had surgery, make that clear at the outset and bring any available operative records. A useful consultation should distinguish the concern you see today from the correction being proposed. Ask what can realistically change, what may remain and whether further surgery is appropriate at all.

ASPS · Rhinoplasty consultation; editorial consultation prompts

Arrive with a history, leave with clear questions.

Prepare your medical conditions, allergies, current medicines and supplements, smoking or alcohol history and previous procedures. Describe both appearance and breathing concerns. The consultation should include examination, available options and an explanation of risks. Do not change prescribed medicines yourself; ask the treating team for individual instructions.

ASPS · Rhinoplasty consultation

Recovery is a sequence, not a reveal.

This visual is an orientation to follow-up, not a fixed timetable. The treating surgeon determines your care and review schedule.

  1. 01

    Initial care

Splints or dressings may protect the nose. Obtain written instructions on care, medicines and the next review.

  2. 02

    Early review

Ask who removes dressings or sutures, when you can resume activities and whom to contact with concerns.

  3. 03

    Ongoing healing

Swelling changes over time; refinement can take up to a year. An early photograph is not the final assessment.

  4. 04

    Continued follow-up

Confirm how reviews continue after you return home and how persistent concerns will be assessed.

ASPS · Rhinoplasty recovery

Discuss the trade-offs before deciding.

Possible risks include breathing difficulty, infection, altered sensation, scarring, septal perforation, dissatisfaction with appearance and further surgery. Anaesthesia has its own risks. Ask which are relevant to your health and proposed operation, how complications would be managed and what alternatives are available.

Reviews, fees & online identity

Do not mix rhinoplasty, sinus and sleep reviews

When reading Oğuz Öğretmenoğlu reviews on Reddit, RealSelf or another forum, identify the exact diagnosis and procedure. A report about sinus surgery or sleep care is not a rhinoplasty outcome, and a before/after story may omit medical treatment. “Botched” language is not evidence without records, timing and independent examination.
